HOW YOU’LL DESCRIBE THIS ROLE 

Working independently and utilizing HTML, CSS and JavaScript, ThinkGeek’s Front-End Web Developer is responsible for design delightful customer experiences and develop intuitive user interfaces for ThinkGeek.com.  The front-end developer works closely with our back-end engineering, marketing, creative, and merchandising teams to design, implement, and improve customer-facing features and experiences. Associate will interact with his or her supervisor as needed by either. Most activities are completed with minimal supervision but may require supervisor’s advance approval.  Some non-routine activities will require leadership’s advance approval.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  • Full lifecycle front-end development making use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create clean, user-centered, engaging interfaces and experiences for ThinkGeek.com
  • New feature development and strategic maintenance and improvement of existing code, making use of best practices to develop a maintainable code base
  • Perform user experience and user interface design & development (wireframing, prototyping, user testing)
  • Collaborate with marketing, merchandising, back-end engineering, customer service, and executive teams
  • Provide ongoing support of existing site content and interactive marketing elements
  • Manage relationships in a manner acceptable to others and to the organization; adhere consistently with all organizational policies related to our respectful workplace
  • Model team commitment by adhering to the team's expectations and guidelines; fulfilling team responsibilities; and demonstrating personal commitment to the team by being cooperative, collaborative, dependable and flexible

YOU’LL BE KNOWN FOR THESE:

  • Technical & Professional Knowledge/Skills- Having achieved a satisfactory level of technical and professional skill or knowledge in position-related areas; keeping up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise
  • Planning and Organizing – Establishes courses of action for self and others to ensure that work is completed efficiently and according to schedule
  • Work Standards- Setting high standards of performance for self; assuming responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments or tasks; self-imposing standards of excellence rather than having standards imposed
  • Building Strategic Trusting Relationships- Using appropriate interpersonal styles to establish effective relationships with customers and internal partners; interacting with others in a way that promotes openness and trust and gives them confidence in one’s intentions

YOU’LL HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THESE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience with JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5 and CSS3, in a public-facing website

YOU’LL NEED THESE SKILLS:

  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript with superior attention to detail
  • Expert in utilizing user-centered design principles and methodologies to deliver new features and improve existing capabilities on ThinkGeek.com
  • Expert in translating business requirements into detailed wireframes, functional mock-ups and platform/product features
  • Expert in interaction design, including assessing user needs, developing workflows, user task analysis, interaction flows, wireframes, low-medium fidelity prototypes, and navigational flows.
  • Expert in designing and maintaining a structured codebase that leverages internal or external APIs
  • Expert in testing one’s one work, including across including across multiple browsers and devices, with a focus on performance
  • Proficient knowledge of using Agile software development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) to deliver incremental value
  • Proficient knowledge of Git or other version control systems
  • Proficient knowledge of Grunt or another task runner to create/compile resources
  • Proficient knowledge of object-oriented analysis and design
  • Proficient knowledge of performance-minded development and optimization
  • Proficient knowledge of integrating third-party services into a customer-facing website
  • Expert written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate with business and technical audiences effectively; proactively provides status on assigned tasks and raises risks and issues in a timely manner
  • Expert ability to navigate ambiguity and effectively manage changing priorities; able to react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently
  • Strong work ethic, well-organized, results-oriented, and able to work both independently and with a team to meet deadlines
  • Proficient knowledge of project elaboration, including user story development and estimation
  • Proficient knowledge of web analytics; experience with at least one commonly-used package (e.g., Omniture, Google Analytics)
  • Maintains awareness of latest web standards and web technologies
  • Working knowledge of setting up, managing, and interpreting A/B/MV tests using various web testing tools
  • Proficient in working in the terminal/command line
  • Working knowledge of SEO preferred
  • Working knowledge of email marketing preferred
  • Working knowledge of a fast-paced, retail e-commerce environment preferred
  • Possess the learning capacity to receive and apply cross-functional training; willingness to assist other functions and work groups as needed so the department achieves or exceeds its overall business objectives
  • Consistently demonstrates a commitment to ThinkGeek & GME policies and procedures, including but not limited to, attendance, confidentiality, conflict of interest and ethical responsibilities
